            Abstract : 
Design and simulation results for surface-emitting terahertz quantum cascade lasers using phase-shifted second-order gratings are presented. Analysis shows performance superior to edge-emitting devices, with outcoupling efficiencies nearly twice as large, and narrow output beam widths.
