  • Abstract
In the QoS (quality of service) provisioned Internet, resource reservation is required to guarantee the allocation of resources. Traditionally, responding to each reservation call, an admission control is performed to guarantee the exclusive use of resources from the pool of resources without sharing. However, different types of reservations - immediate and advance reservations - are existing and making different requests with varying terms (i.e., session duration may be specified or it may not). When the reservation requests are made in unclear terms, there exists conflict to the network service provider on how to share its resource to both types of reservations. To suggest a balanced solution, in this paper, we propose a revenue-based resource management scheme (focusing on the bandwidth) that effectively regulates resource allocation between immediate and advance reservations. By dynamically adjusting the resource boundary, the proposed resource management scheme adaptively reacts to the changes of underlying networks in a timely manner. Several NS-2 based network simulations show that the proposed scheme achieves more stabilized resource utilization while improving the efficiency of resource sharing.
