Abstract :
When extracting unknown band-limited pulses from noise-free signals, the Nyquist criterion defines the minimum sampling frequency uniquely. With well-defined pulse shapes and noisy environment one can use optimum filtering to recover time and amplitude, but it is not always clear what is the necessary sample rate. The present study investigates the relationship between pre-filter bandwidth, pulse shape and sample rate and compares the timing precision with results obtained from analogue set-up. Pulses from an LSO-PMT combination are studied experimentally.
