Abstract
Results of studies for the feasibility of a triple GEM detector as the inner tracking system of the LHCb inner tracker are presented. This is the first time full scale prototypes of triple GEM detectors have been built. The timing resolution of the triple GEM detector was investigated using a special amplifier. In several beam tests the performances in high rate hadron fluxes were studied including discharge probabilities and the prevention of discharges.
