    Total coupling losses as low as 4.37 dB (fibre to waveguide to semiconductor amplifier and back, excluding amplifier gain) were achieved using entirely passive alignment in a hybrid-integrated optical regenerator. Penalty-free 2R regeneration at 40 Gbit/s was demonstrated
