  • Abstract
Power saving in different wireless (WLAN, WPAN and sensor) networks is very crucial since most of the wireless devices are battery-operated. However, putting the devices into the sleep state will result in increased message latency. In our previous paper, we used vacation model from queuing theory to model synchronous wakeup patterns of networked nodes with two different service disciplines: exhaustive and gated. According to the analytical results, the design tradeoffs between latency and power consumption for these two patterns were compared. In this paper, we first present an approximate analysis of the 802.11 PSM based on the gated discipline. Then we propose a new 802.11 PSM algorithm which combines the advantages of both exhaustive and gated designs. Finally performance comparisons with the current 802.11 PSM are included
