Abstract :
The aim of this paper is to improve the performances of the JPEG2000. In fact, our approach consists in inserting a phase of a variable window pretreatment before initiating the JPEG2000 process. We describe an efficient method for determining the variable size of the locally adaptive window using a region-based approach. This investigation allows better quality compression. When compressing images, noise is fatal to compression performance, it can be both annoying for the observer and make transmission of the imagery consume excessive amounts of bandwidth. The pretreatment based on filtering reduces noise and thus improves both visual impression and transmission properties. The comparison between JPEG2000 and JPEG2000 pretreated by our variable window approach shows that the latter is favourable in both PSNR (D. Santa Cruz et al., 1998) and WPSNR (M. Bertini et al., 2004) and in visual inspection evaluation
