Abstract
A programmable random trigger emulation system has been built for evaluating the behavior of high energy physics, nuclear physics and radiology instrumentation. The device is based on the generation of random time intervals using a true random bit generator, emulating realistically the arrival of particles on a detector. In addition, the system provides programmable features for facilitating the evaluation procedure. The system is able to work either as a standalone device with a universal serial bus interface or as a plug-in module for more complex systems. The true random number generation feature together with the FPGA flexibility and the commonly used PC interface enables the use of the system in other fields.
