Abstract
It has been about three decades since the development of the world first commercial vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) equipped with axial magnetic field (AMF) electrodes. The predominance of AMF in controlling high-current vacuum arc (HCVA), by which the interruption capacity of vacuum interrupters (VI) can be enhanced, has stimulated substantial theoretical and experimental investigations on the characteristics of vacuum arc under AMF, particularly, on the effectiveness of AMF in controlling HCVA. In this paper, the researches related to vacuum arc subjected to AMF are reviewed in the aspects of experimental investigation, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The newly emerged knowledge and applications of AMF configuration for better controlling of HCVA are presented and discussed
