To meet the increase in demand, and maintain an operational railway of the West Coast Main Line, it was decided to upgrade the power supply along the main spine of the route using auto transformer (AT) technology in a staged approach. The techniques described in this paper demonstrate that the advantages of autotransformer technology can be applied to complex existing multi track railways.
