Abstract :
Many aspects of electric railway power supplies can be modelled by programs which essentially solve complex systems of equations representing the circuit components and connections including the traction equipments on the trains. Coupled with multi-train movement simulations, it is possible effectively to run a train service and examine the adequacy of the power supply in terms of power rating, volt drop and conductor ratings. It can also examine whether regenerative braking is effective in reducing total loading. More elaborate models can evaluate external fields and electromagnetic interference, stray/ground currents and touch voltage, and other effects like resonances.
