Title :
Technology as an Artistic Medium
Author_Institution :
City Univ. of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Abstract :
Many artists treat electronic and digital technologies as tools for the implementation of predefined artistic ideas. Others, however, regard technology as a medium that suggests creative ideas to them. Technologies become co-participants in the creative process. The sociological approach known as Actor-Network-Theory provides a conceptual framework that clarifies what it means to work with technology as a medium. Concrete examples illustrate possible venues of artistic research and suggest the need for a radical transformation of the methods and goals of media art education.
