Abstract :
Lean manufacturing was identified by comparative measurement of automobile manufacturers. Uninterrupted flow of value added activity was identified as the signature of a lean system, yet no formal measures exist for flow or the structure that supports it. This paper takes measures for structure and flow from complexity science and applies them to manufacturing systems through a novel framework. This includes a case study of the successful application of the framework for process improvement.
