Abstract :
In December 2006, the Royal Society published its report on "Digital healthcare: the impact of information and communication technologies on health and healthcare". The report looked at the wide 10-15 year horizon of ICTs in health and healthcare and its findings and conclusions are highly relevant to the assessment of what may be achievable in the move of healthcare from hospital to the home. ICTs will be both enablers and drivers of change. Some ICTs will save money, some will not. Learning, training and support are key issues. There will be dilemmas in security and confidentiality. An incremental approach to the implementation of ICTs is advocated, with complete user involvement.
