Abstract
This paper is mostly historical but it also describes some technical contributions by Jim James that were considered very useful at that time. The historical aspects include fundamental research which contributed materially to our understanding of the radiation mechanism on dielectric rod antennas. His deep intuitive understanding both at a practical and theoretical level enabled James to clarify antenna design and radiation behaviour of many other emergent antenna technologies, such as microstrip antennas, dielectric resonator antennas and other novel antennas. It is interesting that the results of these works still continue to be used today.
