Abstract
Using two related empirical models, this article estimates the effects of foreign patent applications and intellectual property protection on Chinese technology progress. The results suggest that foreign patent applications have positive effects on Chinese technology progress, but it is smaller compared with the effects of Chinese domestic R&D inputs. Intellectual property protection increases the elasticity of foreign patent applications with respect to promoting Chinese technology progress, while decreases the elasticity of Chinese domestic R&D stocks.
