Abstract :
Recent publications discuss a paradigm shift in RDBMS development: away from a "one size fits all" approach towards application specific database engines. This discussion can also be applied to the field of real-time available- to-promise (ATP) applications. Current state of the art real-time ATP applications at enterprise-scale level offer a real-time checking mechanism, but they are inflexible when it e.g. comes to a rescheduling of already promised goods (backorder processing). This paper outlines the characteristics of real-time ATP and proposes a conceptual draft for a column-oriented main memory real-time ATP database engine. That engine enables real-time order rescheduling through on-the-fly data aggregation for every processed customer request.
