  • Abstract
The paper reviews factors that affect running maintenance of electric multiple units principally in the United Kingdom. The maintenance ´contract´ with the train operator is outlined in terms of reliability and availability statistics. The effects of human factors on train maintenance are considered. The benefits of engineering design simplicity, accessibility and standardisation are stated with an acceptance that these criteria may not be given priority in modern rolling stock specifications. An example of changes to depot facilities to accommodate modern rolling stock is given, and three recent projects involving management of maintenance change are described. The need for knowledge transfer between design and maintenance engineers is emphasised as is the retention of basic electric traction design principles.
