Abstract :
This paper defines the process to establish a space station\´s automation requirements and states the NASA experience on which the space station automation will be based. It defines the data management system functions that integrate all space station subsystems to enable space station autonomy. It discusses the technique of "expert systems" to implement the automation of all space station subsystems. It gives specific detail examples of the application of "expert systems" to a battery subsystem. It concludes with an overall assessment of automation technology risks.
