Abstract
This paper describes a generic dynamic simulator/analyzer for binary cycle geothermal plants using the Heber Binary Project design as a baseline. The simulator/analyzer can be used for engineering analyses of design trade-offs/static and dynamic performance, operator training and operating policy evaluation, and binary cycle technology demonstration. It is operational on a readily available IBM-AT or equivalent. It is a new analytical tool, detailed enough for engineering analysis yet realistic enough for operator training. It is completely interactive from the keyboard and the responses of key plant variables can be observed on a high resolution real-time color display that replicates the actual control room interface. Controller parameters can be changed while a transient is in progress. Pumps and turbines can be tripped. Valves can be failed. In short, a very comprehensive simulation has been combined with a realistic, sophisticated graphics interface. Simulation predictions have been validated by comparisons with actual transient and steady state data taken from the Heber Binary Project. The simulation is accurate to within the uncertainty of the process sensors. Consequently, it represents a valuable tool to future developers of binary-cycle systems.
