Abstract :
Protocols of local-area networks used in manufacturing systems are surveyed. Communication requirements of manufacturing networks are reviewed. The concept of Computer Integrated Manufacturing is outlined, with emphasis on communications involved in CIM systems. Recent research results on the IEEE 802.4 token-passing bus channel-access protocol and the priority mechanism are discussed.
