Abstract
The air traffic control system is in need of improved airport surface traffic control system. It has to meet a variety of requirements of the airport operators, the airlines, pilots and ATC controllers. Most significantly any new system has to be an integral part of the overall future Air Traffic Management System. All aspects of arrival and departure flow control as well as airport facilities management have to be considered, in order to allow safe and efficient ground operations of aircraft. A new operational concept is under development at DLR, which does not only necessitate new solutions in hardware or software functions but most important a very careful new design of the ground controller´s working environment.
