Abstract
This paper considers the control of the force applied on the cutting tool during metal cutting. A general model is derived to describe the dynamics of various machining processes, such as turning and milling. The optimal control approach to differential-difference systems is employed to solve the controller synthesis problem. The structure of the optimal and suboptimal controllers and the corresponding expressions to determine their parameters are given.
