Abstract
Model Reference Control with Time Delay (MRC/TD) was applied to a FORTRAN simulation program of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). An engine throttle with and without applied disturbances was used for comparing the MRC/TD controller with the existing PI controller. Also, both control systems´ performances were compared for atypical engine operation. It was concluded that the MRC/TD controller provides better performance than the existing PI controller. The MRC/TD controller produces better responses for a typical mission. Also, its disturbance rejection properties are better, less computation is involved in generating the control inputs, and it provides more versatility of engine use.
