Abstract
An expert sensor to estimate in real-time the auto regressive and moving average (ARMA) model of a signal from a short data record is proposed with a view to monitor the status of a system. It consists of a linear predictive coding algorithm (LPCA) and an expert system. The expert system validates the estimates and concludes the status of the system using the knowledge acquired from the system theory, heuristics, and temporal and spacial context reasoning. The information is displayed in the order of decreasing importance and increasing precision such that essentials are displayed in the shortest possible time with the complete picture emerging later. The proposed sensor can be used for various applications by including domain specific knowledge.
