Abstract
This paper1 considers the problem of designing stabilizing controllers of low order relative to that of the plant. It is shown that for some plants the order of stabilizing controllers may be less than or equal to l, where l is the number of plant outputs. A characterization of a set of stabilizing controllers of order less than or equal to l is given. The poles of the closed-loop system formed by the plant and low-order stabilizing controller are found to exhibit a separation property. Examples are given to illustrate the main results.
