Abstract
In this paper we propose an algorithm for eigenstructure assignment in which the assignment of eigenvectors play the key role while the eigenvalue placement plays a secondary role. Eigenvectors are closely related to classical mode shapes and the specification of special mode shapes can be effectively used for distributing the vibrational energy of flexible structures. In particular by choosing a linearly independent set of mode shapes so that the relative magnitude at a certain prespecified coordinate is small, that coordinate may be somewhat isolated from excessive vibrational energy. This localization of vibrational energy by choosing mode shapes is similar to the phenomenon of normal mode localization in so called periodic structures. Two examples illustrate the various notions presented in the paper.
