Abstract
The paper describes a time domain approach to model faults in an integrated control and diagnosis system. The design of the integrated system is done in the framework of linear optimal control for persistent inputs. The tradeoffs that govern the control and detection objectives are delineated and the effect of modeling errors is incorporated in the analysis by providing simple analytical expressions for the false alarm threshold and the size of the smallest detectable fault.
