Abstract :
Data communication, satellite communication and other communication facilities commonly use an uninterruptible power system (UPS) for their critical AC power supplies. The requirements of the recent move toward energy conservation have led to a demand for higher efficiency in these UPS´s. This paper describes the actual use the first UPS employing gate turn-off thyristors (GTO) with self-quenching functions in the DC to AC inverter main switching elements, the heart of a UPS. The UPS has such characteristics as high efficiency, higher overload capability, low audible noise and small size. First this paper describes the selection of power semi-conductor and then the new technology for the GTO inverter, and the actual applications of the UPS etc., also are explained.
