Abstract :
The Defense Switched Network (DSN) and the Defense Data Network (DDN), subsystems of the Defense Communications System (DCS), are affected by changes in today´s telecommunications industry. In this paper, changes in the regulatory environment and the impacts of modern technology on these systems are assessed. The demise of TELPAK, the AT&T divestiture and deregulation, and the Computer Inquiry II decision are helping to mold the DCS. The effects of these federally controlled adjustments on the telecommunications industry and the consequent impact on the DSN and the DDN are discussed. Technological changes, such as digital transmission, digital switching, common channel signaling, and modern computer use constitute segments of the complex DCS framework. These changing telecommunications technologies, and their impact on the DCS are also addressed.
