Abstract
A DSN switching system is considered to be multi-function when it is used for switching both base subscribers and interswitch trunks. Multi-function switches are consistent with the concept of a distributed network that colocates switching functions with the user population to reduce access line costs and provide a more survivable network. The new generation of software controlled, high speed, essentially non-blocking digital switches provides the performance needed for multi-function systems. This paper discusses the characteristics of the multi-function switch and its application in the Defense Switched Network.
