Abstract
Until now the telecommunications industry has been the major benefactor of the advantages of fiber optics for transmission of communications signals. Now, however, the rapid development of fiber optic technology permits other applications such as computer communications, local area networks (LANs), data processing, CATV and so on, to enjoy these advantages. In order to understand why fiber optic transmission is benefiting LAN and industrial communications applications it is instructional to look at the characteristics of and requirements for these systems. Following that, the advantages of fiber optic technology can be mapped onto these system requirements.
