Abstract :
This paper looks at the changes in power requirements as communication systems developed and identifies the power losses in the various major building blocks of a telecommunications system. It highlights the cumulative effect of losses in power plant and ancillary equipment for ventilation and cooling and shows where maximum savings of energy could be achieved. The capital and running costs of ancillary plant and necessary buildings have been included in the considerations of energy costs and are expressed in terms of either equivalent energy cost surcharge or as equivalent capital available at installation stage.
