Abstract
Stripe domains in bismuth substituted garnet films act as a phase diffraction grating via the Faraday effect. The stripes are alterable in both orientation and in periodicity by an applied expernal magnetic field; the result is a a two dimensional wide angle light deflector. The application of such films for intersatellite communication and for a non-blocking fiber-optic switchboard is described.
