Abstract :
This paper describes the Suppression of Simultaneous Switching Noise (SSN) or Ground Bounce Noise (GBN) in High Speed Printed Circuit Boards using Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structures. Split planes show good isolation in low frequency range but EBG structures show good isolation in high frequency range. The effectiveness of the structure in common Power/ground Plane in the PCB for the coupling noise is simulated using Ansoft-HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) package. A simple configuration was devised to reduce the coupling noise in the frequency range from 0.5 to 4 GHz. Better than -40 dB coupling is achieved using the optimized structure in the frequency band of 0.77 to 3.07 GHz. The various stages of design optimization of the PCB is discussed for the new structure keeping in view of practical solution to achieve low coupling in high speed PCB. Mathematical modeling of the EBG structure was also done and the coupling coefficient (S12) was calculated and it was verified by measurement. Good agreement between the simulated, measured and calculated results was achieved.
