Abstract :
The engineering and design of modern products and systems with high functionality for instance production systems for steel, paper or plastic, but also of machine tools, mostly necessitates adaptations to customer specific requirements. Especially for material processing machinery, the enormous throughput and resource consumption on the one hand and the relatively low profit margin on the other hand make tailor-made systems the preferred solution over standard systems. 3D CAD parametric design is a powerful tool for making this engineering process more effective and economic. Most effort is taken to the setting up of the parameter models to identify the lead and dependent parameters and the rules deriving the latter from the first. In general, 3D parametric design represents a useful middle course, maybe even a happy medium, to handle the assumed inconsistence between flexibility and standardisation best. Finally, by 3D parametric design significant cost savings and quality improvements of the overall engineering and design process of modern plants, especially process oriented machinery has been achieved.
