Abstract :
Rebreather diving systems have many advantages to standard open circuit system (or SCUBA). They offer higher gas efficiency together with silent and bubble free diving. Moreover instead of cold and dry gas found in open circuit systems the diver takes advantage of a warm and humid breathing gas. While most rebreathers require intensive training and high technical understanding, the Poseidon MK6 closed loop diving system is especially designed to allow easy and uncomplicated operation addressing mainly recreational divers. A network of Atmel ATmega microprocessors control the breathing gas composition, continuously monitor the correct function of the system, validate the multiple sensor signals and perform automatic pre dive checks. In the case of a failure, several warning systems are included. A rebreather is a life supporting system and is classified as personal protective equipment, thus the highest attention must be directed to reliable and safe system design.
