  • Abstract
In this paper, a novel cross-layer handoff approach is proposed based on the emerging integration of Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) and WiMAX. Users suffer long handoff latency and great loss of packets caused by the frequently movement, which is unacceptable for the broadband and real-time service like IPTV. The goal of new handoff approach is to minimize the negative effect caused by handoff. Considering the ability of convergence, universal scheduling and dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) of EPON, information gathered in Optical Line Terminal (OLT) can be used to minimize the handoff latency of layer-2, and simultaneity Cross-layer triggers layer-3 to prepare for handoff to realize the total handoff latency minimized. In the end of this paper a simulation based on the cross-layer handoff scenario is introduced, and the comparison with the existing handoff protocols showing the performance of the new scheme has been markedly improved.
