Abstract
TCP combined with Active Queue Management algorithm is the primary solution of the congestion control problem of IP network. RED is the famous AQM algorithm but it cannot performs well when traffic load is heavy and when the traffic load changes for the reason that the congestion notification sending rate of RED algorithm is determined by maxp and the value of maxp is fixed. As a result, it will lead to queue size oscillation, which results in queuing delay and jitter. This paper proposes a new adaptive AQM algorithm named TL-RED (Traffic Load adaptive RED). Our goal is to stabilized the queue size in a wide variety of traffic scenarios. TL-RED can adjust the value of maxp to the changes of the traffic load so that the congestion notification can be sent to sufficient TCP sources to mitigate the congestion level. Simulation results indicate that TL-RED can effectively avoid the queue overflow and stabilize the queue occupation independent of the number of active TCP connections thus resulting in a more predictable packet delay in the network.
