Abstract :
Visual media is growing massively at a rapid pace. This is due to the advancement of broadband networks/Internet, DSP/media processors and VLSI technology. Application areas include high definition television, multimedia communications and teleconferencing. Despite rapid increase in mass storage density, processor speeds, and digital communication data rates, the demand for visual data storage and visual data transmission bandwidth continues to surpass the capabilities of available technologies. Hence, there have been increasing efforts to develop reliable visual data compression techniques that provide a cost effective solution for the storage and transmission of visual data. The recent MPEG 4 and JPEG 2000 standards address the need for content based compression, coding and manipulation of visual media. With the evolution and inexpensiveness of hardware programmable devices such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGA´s), the implementation and realization of different image and video coding algorithms has become possible and affordable in many of the visual data communication and storage industries, such as digital TV receivers, mobile devices and Internet communications servers.
