Abstract :
Growing levels of distributed generation (DG) are causing a range of problems with network operation including increasing voltage levels and power flows. In order to accommodate such penetrations of DG, the operating philosophy of distribution networks must evolve from passive to active. Active network management (ANM) allows the safe and secure access of DG to networks without the need for costly reinforcements and upgrades [1], however, it will cause a range of subsidiary effects to network operation. This paper addresses the effects of DG and ANM deployment on the control room and the operational challenges that lay ahead. It then details the experimental approach under development to determine the best course of action in the development of new control room support tools. Reader interest in this paper will be in the area of the simulation of active networks and the proposed control room support tools that will be developed.
