Abstract
This paper develops multinomial log it models of commute mode choice for female and male respectively. On the basis of the information of personal and household characteristics, a set of potential explanatory factors pertaining to the traveler´s socioeconomic situation have been defined. The 2001 Madrid census data has been employed to explore how socioeconomic factors, land use attributes, and travel distance influence commute mode choice. The empirical analysis indicates that land use attributes and travel distance considerations are important in explaining the variation in commute mode choice when controlling for the socioeconomic characteristics of travelers.
