Abstract
A transient two dimensional model is developed for an atmospheric carbon arc burning between two graphite electrodes immersed in liquid water. The model solves the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations with moving boundary representing the growth of bubble. Evaporation of water by arc radiation is taken into account. Carbon vapour supporting the discharge is generated by anode erosion. Detailed results on the evolution of a 30 A DC arc are presented and discussed.
