Abstract :
This paper describes the design of a 1.25 Gb/s laser diode (LD) driver with APC (Automatic Power Control) for PON (Passive Optical Network) system fabricated in a 0.18 ¿m CMOS single-poly-six-metal technology. The measured -3 dB frequency bandwidth is 2.49 GHz and small signal gain is 17 dB, suitable for the operation even up to 2.5 Gb/s. The implemented laser diode driver consisted of a modulation amplifier, a bias amplifier, and a digital APC. Digital APC (Automatic Power Controller) was implemented to ensure constant laser diode output power.
