Abstract :
The effectiveness of using lead-lag compensation for offsetting the long time delay of wide area signals is analyzed in this study. Time domain simulations of a nonlinear system are used to obtain the parameters of a wide area damping controller (WADC) via particle swarm optimization with a performance of integral of the time-weighted squared error. A four-machine, two-area system is used to test the WADC in the interconnected power system for multiple time delays with a wide operating range. The simulation results show that the WADC can damp the low frequency oscillations.
