Abstract :
Silicon photonics opens up new possibilities for the realization of diverse photonic devices and components required for advanced optical communication systems. One of the key building blocks developed on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer is the optical micro-ring resonator. In this invited talk we will consider the basic theory of optical micro-ring resonator and analyse the side-coupled integrated spaced sequence of resonators (SCISSOR) as well as the coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) with emphasis on realization of several optical functionalities such as filters, add-and-drop multiplexers, optical logic gates, power equalizer, ¿-converters, format converters, dispersion compensators etc. Finally, a step-by-step design approach will be presented for demodulation of both single-channel optical DPSK and three-channel optical DPSK using a CROW-type microresonator based band-pass filter .The impact of apodization on the designed band-pass filter has also been highlighted in terms of the improvement of the eye-opening of the demodulated DPSK signal.
