Abstract :
The design of a programmable digital signal processing ASIC implementing the central signal processing functions of a heart rate measurement instrument is described. The ASIC is based on bit-serial arithmetics, which yields a very area efficient implementation required in consumer electronics applications. The programming options make it possibe to adapt the circuit for several applications ranging from coarse heart rate measurement to accurate heart rate variability analysis.
