Abstract :
P2P application has accounted a large proportion of the total Internet traffic. However, existing P2P topology formation protocols always assume a homogeneous environment or neglect the underlying Internet topology. These methods will increase inter-domain traffic so that ISPs always restrict the P2P traffic and current neighbor selection procedure always randomly chooses a peer as its neighbor probably a remote peer with large link latency, namely the performance of P2P applications degraded. In this paper, we propose a locality-aware unstructured P2P topology formation protocol in a heterogeneous environment. Our protocol combines the network heterogeneity and node locality to improve the neighbor selection procedure. This topology formation protocol consists of two parts: the joining process and the adjustment process. Through the two processes, we can build a lower network diameter and mean link latency P2P network. The experimental results based on simulations have verified the effectiveness of our protocol. Compared with the SCAMP protocol, our protocol shortens the network diameter by about 10% and cuts down the mean link latency by more than 36%.
