Abstract :
Besides positioning, Compass systems can also be employed in the transmission of short messages. This is a unique advantage compared to other positioning systems like GPS and GLONASS. As a result, the resources of the Compass system is fully taking advantage of in this case as the more traditional application, positioning, suffers from low precision, common in first generation Compass system. The focus of the next generation of Compass system will be on improving the precision hence broadening its applications. This paper explores the building structure of the first generation Compass system, which consists of the system composition, system parameters, communication mechanism and its fields of applications. In addition, a look into the prospects of future application of the next generation is presented.
