Abstract
In this paper a novel design of a wideband antenna that can operate in two different, complementary UWB sub-bands is presented. The proposed antenna is a dual layer design, consisting of a microstrip feed line with embedded PIN diodes on the back side of the board, and a circular slot with an elliptical patch within on the front side of the board. It can be switched between two states, one covering the lower frequency range 3.1–6 GHz, and the other one covering the upper frequency range 6–10.6 GHz. Operation principles are explained in detail and the antenna performance in both sub-bands is confirmed by fullwave analysis.
